The 2025 John Tiratsoo Award for Young Achievement
This award recognizes the achievements of individuals under 36 years of age who have demonstrated a valuable and original contribution to the industry. Nominations should reference or reflect these qualities:
Nature of achievement(s)
Industry contribution or innovation
Leadership potential
Nominations can be made by anyone but must be endorsed/supported by senior managers within the organization.
Nominations will be evaluated, and the winners decided, by a rotating panel of judges
The winners are announced and awards presented at the Pipeline Pigging & Integrity Management Conference in Houston, Texas on Wednesday, January 29, 2025.
Nominations are due by December 20, 2024

Winners will be recognized with interviews in World Pipelines magazine and will each receive a $1000 grant underwritten by the PPIM conference.

The Young Pipeliners movement has made great strides in recent years in its quest to build the next generation of leaders. Certain key individuals have gone above and beyond in their contributions to this through leadership of their local YP group. Despite graduating from being a “young” pipeliner they continue to add value to the wider industry, support and be an ambassador for newcomers.
YPI recognized the following individuals at the 2020 International Pipeline Conference during their report to the industry.

Peter is the Co-founder & Past Chair of YPAC, board advisor of YPAC, and involved with ASME PSD, IPC, CEPA, and CGA. In the video he submitted for his nomination he said, “Those in the pipeline industry really look out for each other and also know the true value of access to affordable energy and how that has greatly improved our lives over the past 100 years”.

Clayton Warner
General Manager, Queensland at Fyfe
Clayton has been part of YPF for 8 years in a leadership role and was the winner of the APGA Young Achievement Award. He also gives back to the pipeline community through coaching and mentoring. In the video he submitted for his nomination he said, “Transporting CO2 for safe storage and hydrogen for fuel will play a big part in reducing emissions and for the industry to pivot in the right direction, which I believe will assist in the public’s perception”.

Liam Hatchell

Liam is a past chair of YPF and helps give the youth a voice by getting them a seat at the table on Australian and International standard committees. In the video he submitted for his nomination he said, “The young individuals who enter this industry knowing its history, how it is perceived, but are still extremely enthusiastic about how they can help to transform it – THAT is our disruptive change”

Sarah is the past president and CEO of YPAC, testified at the Bill C-69 Senate hearings, and is a board member for IPC Foundation. In the video she submitted for her nomination she said, “I think it’s really important that young people continue to be engaged in government committees, because after all it is OUR energy future”.

Felippe is the co-founder & first president of YPP Brazil and participates in ASME PSD in Brazil. In the video he submitted for his nomination he said, “The pipeline industry is not made ONLY of engineers! We need lawyers, professionals specialized in public awareness, among others”.

Tara is the Founder and original Chair of YPP USA and currently services as its President on the Board of Directors. In the video she submitted for her nomination she said, “We’re having side conversations about technical issues we’re facing, brainstorming solutions and ideas, and supporting one another”.

Kevin Tsang

Kevin is Co-Founder, Past VP and Treasurer of YPAC – Young Pipeliners Association of Canada. Kevin is also member in the Executive Committee of ASME (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers) Pipeline System Division (PSD) and was in the IPC – International Pipeline Conference Organizing Committee & founder of Young Pipeliners Panel.
Kevin believes that “The industry efforts and contributions have to be related to the general public and give them a reason for the industry to exist”.

Douglas is the past president of YPP Brazil, Co-Founder and Coordinator of the Brazilian Pipeline Risk Community, and has established a pipeline incident database. In the video he submitted for his nomination he said, “Combining the energy of young people with the experience of seniors is the key point of having a strong pipeline community, both in Brazil and around the world”.

Neyra Ninel Gutiérrez Oropeza
Petroleum Engineer
Neyra is an Active Member at Young Pipeline Professionals – Mexico (YPP) and is improving participation of female professionals within the industry.
Neyra mentioned that “The safety of the public has to be number one priority”. She also highlighted the importance of diversity, saying that “Generational diversity brings so many sets of skills to the table and it creates an opportunity for integration”.

Julio is the Co-founder of YPP Brazil and is present in most of their events. In the video he submitted for his nomination he said, “What makes me want to participate in this community is the plurality of people… this is very important because it makes our community think outside the box, thinking in different and innovative ways”.
